Abaton is a family-owned niche perfumery from Savona in coastal northern Italy. Each of their three original fragrances, created by Marco Abaton, are built around the essential oil of the peel and petals of chinotto, grown on the Abaton family farms.
Chinotto is a bitter orange citrus tree, originally from China, that has been growing in the Savona region for hundreds of years. Local artisans use chinotto to make a wide range of gourmand goods, from soda and bitters to honey and hard candy. The Abaton family tends to their orchards with care, protecting the chinotto trees from the threat of climate change in order to supply the local community with this important fruit.
In keeping with this ethos, the more commonly used essential oil in their perfumes is from the fruit's peels. In their beautiful floral fragrance, Fior di Chinotto, Marco Abaton uses essential oil carefully extracted from chinotto blossoms, which are only harvested from the orchards every two years to ensure enough fruit is produced.
